Fire, Wind, Water
This powerful message challenges us to reconsider what we're really asking for when we pray for the Holy Spirit to show up in our lives. Using vivid imagery from Scripture—fire, wind, and water—we're reminded that the Holy Spirit doesn't just bring the inspirational mountaintop moments we crave. Yes, the Spirit creates, inspires, and performs miracles, but there's another side we often overlook: the Spirit also does destructive work, burning away chaff, cutting through rock like flowing water, and moving unpredictably like wind. The message draws from John the Baptist's description of baptism with fire, Jesus teaching Nicodemus about wind, and the promise of living water flowing from within believers. Perhaps most challenging is the idea that the Holy Spirit brings God's presence into our breakdowns—those painful seasons of deconstruction—before leading us to breakthrough. Like wheat being separated from chaff, we need things removed from our lives that once protected us but now prevent us from becoming what God intends. The chaff isn't always sin; sometimes it's immaturity or false securities we've clutched too tightly. This winnowing process happens not in isolation but in community, as we share the decreating and recreating work with other believers. When we come to communion, we're acknowledging that we all still have chaff that needs burning, and we're surrendering together to whatever the Holy Spirit wants to do in and through us.
