He Limits
What if the very limits we spend our lives fighting against are actually the places where God meets us most powerfully? Psalm 139:5 confronts us with an unsettling image: a God who hems us in on every side and lays his hand upon us. That word for 'hem' carries the weight of a siege, an encirclement, and our instinct is to push back. But this message invites us to sit with the discomfort long enough to ask a harder question: what if God is not just protecting us from the dangers around us, but also protecting us from ourselves? Through the lens of David hiding in caves, exiles rebuilding after captivity, and the rhythms of our own everyday lives, we discover that limitation is not the enemy of a full life. It may be the very condition that makes a full life possible. The soul, it turns out, does not expand by getting more of what it wants. It expands when we accept and even embrace the boundaries placed around us. This is the counterintuitive logic at the heart of spiritual maturity, and it is as relevant to our daily frustrations as it is to our deepest questions about identity and purpose.
