Bright Side | Hospitality

In a world filled with voices predicting doom and declaring that darkness has already won, we're invited to discover an ancient yet radical truth: God hasn't given up on this world, and neither should we. Drawing from the letters of John, particularly 1 John, we encounter a powerful response to the Gnostics—ancient philosophers who believed the material world was a broken prison created by an incompetent deity, and that salvation meant escaping our bodies to reach some distant spiritual realm. But John offers something revolutionary: he reminds us that Jesus came in flesh we could see, hear, and touch. This wasn't just a theological detail—it was proof that God loves the physical world enough to enter it fully, experiencing every vulnerability, limit, and pain that we face. The path to defying darkness isn't through secret knowledge or transcending our humanity, but through something beautifully ordinary: faithful hospitality. Around tables in living rooms, sharing meals with needy people, we discover that life begins at our limits. When we embrace our vulnerabilities rather than trying to escape them, when we invite others into our messy kitchens and imperfect lives, we participate in the redemption Jesus offers. Our pain, shame, fear, and betrayal aren't prisons to escape but experiences to be redeemed through fellowship—real partnership and active help with one another and with God. This is where complete joy is found.
